To pursue one of my educational passions in supporting children when they need assistance in reading and writing is a wonderful privilege.
Reading Recovery is:
A program developed by Marie Clay – psychologist and educationist in New Zealand and is specifically researched and designed to provide a second chance for those students who haven’t developed reading and writing skills for students after their first year of Schooling to the level of their peers.
Roughly a 12 to 20 week program that comprises a daily half hour session of reading and writing taking the child from what they know and building on that with support to meet the challenges of new learning.
Each day the Reading Recovery teacher works individually with the child who:
Reads three or four familiar books to gain confidence in reading
Writes a sentence using their own ideas
Re-assembles the cut-up sentence to practise searching for words
Works with letters and words to assist in spelling
Reads a new book to further develop reading skills
We are very fortunate that literacy support is a top priority at MMPS. It is funded accordingly to meet the needs of most Grade 1 students.
Literacy Support
Additional literacy support is provided to Grades 2-6 in a variety of ways to meet the specific needs identified by class teachers and includes:
assisting in “Writer’s Workshop” including developing spelling strategies
assisting with the development of oral language skills
